“That was nice,” Elizabeth says, joining me in the kitchen once we’re done eating. She gestures for me to move away so she can do the dishes. I grin as I do so.

“Yeah, it certainly went better than I hoped,” I tell her. “Myles seems like a nice guy.”

She nods. “He is. He’s perfect for me.”

I can see the love she has for him in her eyes. I hope to God she doesn’t get hurt. Love is fragile and more often than not, it only brings pain. There’s no way to spare my daughter from that, but I do hope she doesn’t have it as bad as me. And who knows, she might get lucky. Maybe Myles Barkley will be her forever guy. Although I’m not sure that exists.

He really does seem perfect for her, though. He’s mostly quiet and calm. I know Elizabeth can sometimes be a little aggressive, like a feral cat. I smile at the thought, although I don’t dare voice it. She narrows her eyes like she knows, though.

“Who are you thinking about?” she asks.

I clear my throat and look away, “No one.”

“You were totally thinking about someone. Your girlfriend? And don’t even think about lying and saying you don’t have one. I know you do, Dad.”

“I don’t,” I tell her, crossing my arms.

She glares at me and I laugh. “I’m serious.”

It’s not a lie. Celeste and I are certainly something, but we haven’t had the typical boyfriend, girlfriend conversation. It feels juvenile, especially at my age. But I’m sure she would appreciate it.

“I still don’t believe you,” she states. “I’ll be in New York for a month or two, Dad. I’m going to find out all your secrets eventually.”

I hurriedly mask my horror at that.

I really, really hope not.
